What We Do
BioVivara develops and provides nature emulating vivariums, accessories, starter kits, and educational resources to promote healthy indoor habitats for plants and animals.
Why We Do It
Founded in 2008, BioVivara is the result of an idea: animal and plant enclosures should emulate nature as much as possible. Why? Because nature knows best. Animals and plants thrive in their natural, complex ecosystems. To get the most enjoyment from our plants and animals, and ensure that they are thriving (not just surviving), we have reconstructed the vivarium to better emulate nature in the home and office. Our systems provide the necessary framework for small pet and specialty plant owners to recreate the special environmental factors necessary to ensure thriving animals and plants.
Our History
We started out as hobbyists, designing and building terrariums, paludariums, and planted aquariums for our personal enjoyment. Seth started keeping exotic plants and animals when he was a small child. We have built and maintained many aquariums, palaudariums, and terrariums through the years. But, we have always been frustrated with the constant compensation necessary to keep our plants and animals alive due to the challenges of recreating a natural ecosystem within a vivarium.
In 2008, we started building and selling custom enclosures, backgrounds, and vivarium accessories in our basement. We also grew select hard-to-find plants and sold them locally and online. Our frustration with existing products on the market increased as we made extensive modifications to emulate natural biotypes. So, we started experimenting with glass and acrylic to develop a framework that would be ideal for our favorite hobbies, particularly dart frogs and orchids.
In 2011, we started working exclusively with acrylic due to its lighter weight, easier shipping, technological advances (such as greater scratch resistance and excellent weathering) and ease of customization for our needs. We continued to prototype our comprehensive enclosure systems and began the process of patenting some of our creations (like the patent-pending Water-Flow System and Air-Flow System).
In 2012 we are launching our first widely available comprehensive enclosures, including the Rainforest-Emulating Vivarium and the Mini-Orchid Desktop Vivarium, via Kickstarter.com.
